Optimizing Images for Flickr
Have you ever typed in a word on a search engine (duh – who hasn’t?) and image results are displayed on the search result page? With the right tactics you could have your photos be displayed in search results – which would drive more traffic and awareness to you! It is very important that you take the time to optimize the images on your website and there are several tactics for doing so, but I will save that for another mini e-book.
What I am going to suggest to you today is an easy way to optimize images on the web right now – even if you are not that web saavy and don’t edit your own website. Flickr is an online image hosting website that allows you to create your own account and upload photos (and video too) and organize them into albums. This is a convenient way to have an online backup of all your images, in case your computer would crash. It is also an easy way to share photos online with friends and family members who may not be on Facebook (yes, there are a few people who are not on Facebook – yet).
Where Flickr is most effective and appears in search results most often is on Yahoo. You know, the other search engine. Below is a screen shot of the image search results that appeared for the word, sunsets. You will see on a few occasions where the images are being hosted on Flickr. You will notice this because of the Flickr icon and the domain name that appears below the image.
Use awesome photos. Yes, it’s that simple. People are attracted to the better images so use interesting, high quality and unique photos whenever possible. Often times, for my blog I purchase images from Istock. If an image is appealing, people are more likely to view the photo and share with their friends.
Now, let me break down the actual “optimization” of the image you upload to Flickr. See image “A” I made for you displaying the anatomy of an optimized Flickr image. For sake of using a generic example, I am going to use my adorable Yorkshire, Gus as an example (who is now 5 years old)! There is an area to add a title, description and tags to the photo. I use my key phrase as the title of the photo, then I try to mention my key phrase a couple times in the description area and lastly I add the key phrase and other similar key phrases as tags.
I should also quickly point out that you should be clear on what keywords and phrases is part of your optimization strategy.
Then you will also want to make what Flickr calls, a set, and implement the same keyword strategy. See my screenshot of the set I created (image “B”). I suggest using the same key phrase as the title and altering the description just a little bit but still using the key phrase a couple times throughout the content.
Once your set is created, you will then want to add tags. See my screenshot (image “C”) to know how to navigate to the tag area. Add your keywords to the set.
Keep in mind, this only one tactic to optimization. You will probably not have overnight, overwhelming success due to this tactic – but it should be part of your optimization plan and not overlooked!
